Ginger cultivation originally began in South Asia, but is also widespread in East Africa and the Caribbean. It is used in cooking, medicine and perfumery, while it is also used for religious purposes.
Ginger is a perennial medicinal plant that has a tuberous rhizome with characteristic brown skin on the outside, while inside it is light yellow in color and emits a characteristic spicy and lemony aroma.
Asince 1585, Jamaican ginger was the first oriental spice to be cultivated in America and her Oceania, and was subsequently introduced into Europe. India currently holds the lead in production, replacing China, which is the second largest producer. It is followed by Indonesia, Nepal and Thailand. Jamaican quality is considered better.
